Azerbaijan Introduction:
Azerbaijan is located in the southeastern part of the Transcaucasian region at the junction of the Eurasian continent, with an area of 86600 square kilometers. It borders the Caspian Sea in the east, Iran and Türkiye in the south, Russia in the north, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan across the sea in the east, and Georgia and Armenia in the west. It connects Central Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Russia. It is an important node and trade route of the “the Belt and Road”, which is one of the countries through which China Europe trains pass. And it has many trade ports including Baku Port, the largest in the Caspian Sea region, with natural advantages in international trade logistics. The GDP for 2024 is 74.316 billion US dollars, with an actual GDP growth rate of 4.1% for the whole year. As of March 2024, the population of Azerbaijan is 10.1875 million, with a high growth rate. The median age is 32 years old, of which 24% are under 14 years old and 65% are between 18-50 years old. The population has strong purchasing power and is enthusiastic about consumption. Its ethnic characteristics are liking excitement, socializing, and hosting parties.
Azerbaijan is rich in oil and gas resources, with oil reserves ranking 20th in the world and natural gas reserves ranking 9th in the world. The oil and gas and related industries account for over 70% of the country’s GDP, earning it the nickname “Little Dubai of West Asia”. Azerbaijan’s industry is based on the energy economy of oil and gas extraction, supplemented by automobile maintenance, trade, agriculture, and a small amount of manufacturing. The productivity of daily necessities is relatively low, and most of the materials rely on imports, especially lacking high-quality products. In 2024, China will become Azerbaijan’s second largest trading partner and the largest source of imports, with 45% of China’s trade with the South Caucasus region coming from Azerbaijan.
Development Trends and Future Prospects of the Automotive and Auto Parts Industry:
The whole vehicle market in Azerbaijan has shown a steady growth trend in recent years, mainly due to economic development, accelerated urbanization process, and the improvement of residents’ income levels. At present, the number of cars in Azerbaijan is about 2.5 million, and the number of cars per thousand people is about 260, which is lower than the European average. However, with the rise of the middle class and the improvement of consumer power, the demand for cars continues to grow, and sales remain stable at around 80000 units per year, with SUVs and compact cars being the most popular. The auto parts market in Azerbaijan is also gradually developing, with a market size of about 300 million US dollars and an annual growth rate of about 5%. This market is mainly dominated by imported products, with locally produced products accounting for only 20%.
At present, the Azerbaijani government is increasing its emphasis on environmental protection and paying attention to the new energy vehicle market. As local cars are in a period of upgrading, the government plans to introduce more electric vehicles and build sufficient charging infrastructure in the coming years.
The automotive and auto parts industry in Azerbaijan is currently in a critical stage of rapid development, with factors such as the increasing demand for private car purchases, the rise of new energy vehicles, the popularization of intelligent technology, and the acceleration of localized production providing it with broad development space. At the same time, regional cooperation and internationalization opportunities also provide opportunities for domestic and foreign enterprises to enter this market. In the future, with the support of government policies and the improvement of infrastructure, Azerbaijan is expected to become an important market for the automotive and auto parts industry in the South Caucasus region and even beyond.
In recent years, with the rapid development of China’s economy, Azerbaijanis have begun to actively learn Chinese culture and signed a number of cooperation agreements with China. The two countries have friendly relations. Under the framework of the “the Belt and Road” cooperation, they have provided policy support and convenient conditions for Chinese enterprises, and purchased a large number of Chinese goods, and set off a “China craze” in the local area. “Made in China” is popular in the local area. China’s export to Azerbaijan has grown rapidly, with an increase of 46% in 2023.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries:
During the meeting, the two sides issued the Joint Statement of the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Azerbaijan on Establishing Strategic Partnership, and signed a series of cooperation documents on jointly building the “the Belt and Road”, connectivity and other fields. Since 2017, Azerbaijan has actively participated in the construction of the “the Belt and Road” and sought new opportunities for cooperation in various industries. The development strategies of the two countries are highly consistent, and cooperation on jointly building the the Belt and Road has continued to advance, with bilateral trade volume growing more than 1200 times in 30 years.
The main products imported by Azerbaijan from China include electrical equipment, automobiles, building materials, mechanical equipment, clothing, consumer electronics and food, photovoltaic new energy equipment, etc.
