Azerbaijan Introduction:
Azerbaijan is located in the southeastern part of the Transcaucasian region at the junction of the Eurasian continent, with an area of 86600 square kilometers. It borders the Caspian Sea in the east, Iran and Türkiye in the south, Russia in the north, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan across the sea in the east, and Georgia and Armenia in the west. It connects Central Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Russia. It is an important node and trade route of the “the Belt and Road”, which is one of the countries through which China Europe trains pass. And it has many trade ports including Baku Port, the largest in the Caspian Sea region, with natural advantages in international trade logistics. The GDP for 2024 is 74.316 billion US dollars, with an actual GDP growth rate of 4.1% for the whole year. As of March 2024, the population of Azerbaijan is 10.1875 million, with a high growth rate. The median age is 32 years old, of which 24% are under 14 years old and 65% are between 18-50 years old. The population has strong purchasing power and is enthusiastic about consumption. Its ethnic characteristics are liking excitement, socializing, and hosting parties.
Azerbaijan is rich in oil and gas resources, with oil reserves ranking 20th in the world and natural gas reserves ranking 9th in the world. The oil and gas and related industries account for over 70% of the country’s GDP, earning it the nickname “Little Dubai of West Asia”. Azerbaijan’s industry is based on the energy economy of oil and gas extraction, supplemented by automobile maintenance, trade, agriculture, and a small amount of manufacturing. The productivity of daily necessities is relatively low, and most of the materials rely on imports, especially lacking high-quality products. In 2024, China will become Azerbaijan’s second largest trading partner and the largest source of imports, with 45% of China’s trade with the South Caucasus region coming from Azerbaijan.
Development Trends and Future Prospects of Building Materials, Hardware, and Decoration Industry:
Azerbaijan has experienced rapid economic development in recent years, with sustained growth in demand from the construction, real estate, and decoration industries.
With the government’s promotion of urbanization and infrastructure construction, the demand for building materials, hardware, and decorative products is showing a diversified trend.
The building materials market in Azerbaijan has experienced rapid development in the past decade, with the construction industry accounting for 12% of Azerbaijan’s total economy. With other energy economy countries carrying out economic reforms and achieving excellent results, the Azerbaijani government has begun to actively develop non oil industries while consolidating oil and gas development, in order to promote the comprehensive development of the national economy. The development momentum of large-scale infrastructure, tourism services, and retail industries is significant. The Hazare Islands infrastructure project, expected to cost $100 billion, has attracted the attention of Asia and even the world. The entire project covers an area of 24 square kilometers and consists of 41 artificial islands and 19 districts, including 60 high-rise residential buildings, 150 schools, 50 kindergartens and hospitals, as well as multiple cinemas, theaters, restaurants, shopping centers, and parks. Residential areas will occupy 8 million square meters, of which 4 million square meters will be used to build shopping and commercial centers, and another 4 million square meters will be used to build hotels and apartments. More than 1 million people will live here, making it a new Venice city.
And the Azerbaijani government plans to attract more foreign direct investment, increasing the proportion of foreign direct investment to GDP from 2.6% to 4%, in order to strengthen the development of non oil economic sectors. In addition, Azerbaijan, as one of the easiest countries in the CIS region to engage in trade, has a rapidly developing construction industry with huge market demand. Official data shows that the total amount of construction projects in Azerbaijan is as high as 285 billion US dollars, indicating a huge demand for the building materials market in the country. The annual average amount of building materials, hardware, and decorative products imported by Azerbaijan is about 2.3 billion US dollars. This number has shown a steady growth trend in the past few years.
In recent years, with the rapid development of China’s economy, Azerbaijanis have begun to actively learn Chinese culture and signed a number of cooperation agreements with China. The two countries have friendly relations. Under the framework of the “the Belt and Road” cooperation, they have provided policy support and convenient conditions for Chinese enterprises, and purchased a large number of Chinese goods, and set off a “China craze” in the local area. “Made in China” is popular in the local area. China’s export to Azerbaijan has grown rapidly, with an increase of 46% in 2023.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries:
During the meeting, the two sides issued the Joint Statement of the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Azerbaijan on Establishing Strategic Partnership, and signed a series of cooperation documents on jointly building the “the Belt and Road”, connectivity and other fields. Since 2017, Azerbaijan has actively participated in the construction of the “the Belt and Road” and sought new opportunities for cooperation in various industries. The development strategies of the two countries are highly consistent, and cooperation on jointly building the the Belt and Road has continued to advance, with bilateral trade volume growing more than 1200 times in 30 years.
